*Allow for meaningful independent practice of skills
*Enable the teacher to assess and evaluate the students' use of literacy skills and strategies
*Include many "hands-on" learning activities
*Encourage student choice and differentiation
*Use a variety of activities to meet all student levels
*Provide routine and accountability in the classroom
*Can be set up anywhere in the classroom
*Use materials that are familiar to the students
*Are enjoyed by students and teachers!
